6 Steps to Commission Art

Have you been thinking about commissioning art for your space and want to know what's next? Here are the 6 steps to getting the perfect artwork created just for you and hanging in your home.

'White Salt Nets' piece commissioned by client Stephanie and made to fit perfectly into the hallway enclave.

1. Gather Inspiration

Meander around my website and Instagram for art inspiration. Are there any artworks or colour schemes that really stand out for you?

Do you have maps of the area where you live, flowers or landscapes that you love, or photographic inspiration you would like the art to reference?

If you have an interior designer, they can provide me with your mood board, fabrics and any project images and specifications that we can work with.

Download the current commission art price guide (go to the Commission Art page) to get a sense of costs, and to see how clients have included the art in their homes.

Reach out via email with your inspiration images and ideas to sarah@dalyandx.com.

2. Conversation

Next, we organise a discovery conversation. I love hearing about your project, your ideas, where the piece will hang, and how you want your space to feel. This is where I get to know more about you, so I can achieve the right feeling and story for the piece.

With previous clients, I have had discovery conversations via email, on the phone, over Zoom, or in person. We can work out together what suits best.

3. Art Specification

Next, we agree on the design, size, price and time-frame. Paintings normally take between 6 - 8 weeks to complete.

I will send an invoice at this stage. A 50% deposit is made and work is scheduled.

Commission inspired by the local flora and landscape. In collaboration with Dani Louis Interiors for a client in Brisbane.

4. Work Commences

I order the stretched canvas and get started. Oil paintings occur over many detailed layers, so I am often working on several pieces at different stages. You will be able to see in-progress studio images through the @sarahdaly.art Instagram page.

For some commissions, I use artificial intelligence programs as a creative tool. I can talk about how I do this in our discovery conversation. You can also read about it here. The data, including colours, maps and other inspiration images, are uploaded into a generative adversarial network and are referenced during different stages of the painting process. The final piece that hangs on your wall is hand painted.

5. Approval

Images of your artwork are sent to you for approval. Small edits can be undertaken at this stage. Final payment is made prior to framing and delivery.

6. Framing and Delivery

Your original art will be beautifully framed in sustainably sourced Australian oak, and you can choose from natural oak (with a beeswax finish), white or black. Your piece comes ready to hang on your wall.

Your art will be professionally packed and shipped by a trusted interstate or local courier.

You will also receive a Certificate of Authenticity with your painting.

‘White Salt Net’ commission brings beautiful texture and nuance into this Pool House, Designed by Angela Smith Interiors.

100% Guarantee

To help you feel absolutely safe about the process and the art I make, I offer a guarantee on my work. If after 7 days you do not love your commissioned art, return it and receive a 100% refund.

I would love to make a painting that is perfect for you.

Please send me an email with your ideas or any questions you may have. Then, we can book in a time to talk!

I'm looking forward to making you a beautiful artwork that tells your story.

Best,

Inspired by the sparse Australian desert and the bilum weaving technique I grew up with in Papua New Guinea. Filled with textural detail and layers of colour, creating a piece that brings the light of our wide open country into your interior environment. Part of a series of aerial landscapes.
