Artificial/ Authentic: 106 AI Portraits

I recently created 106 AI Portraits for the Women in AI ANZ 2022 Awards in Melbourne called 'Artificial/ Authentic'. This is a short video explaining how I did it and why.

I used images of amazing people who are taking an active role in augmenting human thinking with AI, then filtered them through the lens of both a human artist and a machine (using neural style transfer). The intention is to prompt us to consider how we see ourselves in relation to artificial intelligence.

The series is inspired by a painting by Henri Matisse called 'The Green Stripe'. Created in 1905, it was considered revolutionary because it allowed two ways of perceiving light and shadow in the same image. Artificial/ Authentic considers new ways we might see ourselves. Its purpose is to encourage conversations and diversity of perspectives as we develop technologies that can change our world.

Each personalised piece was digitally printed on brushed aluminum and given on the Awards Night at the National Gallery of Victoria last week.

Thank you to Andra Müller for the opportunity to create these pieces, and to everyone involved in the awards - it was a room full of openness, appreciation, collaboration and kindness.
