Creating ‘Emerald in the Deep’
When you dive a little deeper than you thought you could, into cold waters, and the world around you changes. That’s the feeling that this beautiful new piece evokes.
Depth of colour, with a contemporary aesthetic
This piece started with tonal layers which would sit underneath the final emerald green. I paint in layers to create depth of colour and texture. The wonderful thing about using oil paints over acrylics - this level of luminescent colour is possible. Oil paints have been used by artists for hundreds of years because they both bring out the pigment of the paint, and they stand the test of time. I used a beeswax medium in the final layers to give a soft lustre.
This piece feels both contemporary and timeless.
Inspired by the Mediterranean coast
This piece was created after days swimming off the Mediterranean coast, before the waters became warm. The shimmering green was everywhere. It was like finding myself inside a shimmering emerald. Time stopped, and everything was quiet.
For me, being in Barcelona was a time to refresh and reinvigorate my creativity. It is a space to be influenced my new ideas, try out new techniques, and let my mind wander a little.
I loved created these new pieces and hope you enjoy them too.
