Creating ‘The Deep End’

Our Melbourne based client had seen a previous commission for a client in Ashgrove and wanted something similar for her home. She had been in lock-down and was taking the time to style her inner city home. She sent an email to commission the piece.

Rather than reproduce the Ashgrove painting, we asked if there was somewhere special that she would like an aerial landscape of - somewhere than held important memories for her. There certainly was.

Rowan Park.jpg

Here is the family property I grew up on in Rowan Park. The lake at times it went all the way up to the house! I would love it if you could include the channel section - we called this the deep end and had loads of fun playing and swimming there, such wonderful memories.

We used her photo to inform the composition. On other pieces, we have used drone footage or Google Earth. The painting took around three weeks to make and included over 15 layers of soft colours and textures, all creating the perfect balance. The base layer set out the main colours and landscape features. Next, the detail commenced. Close to completion, we did a final check with the client on the colours, and added a touch more of her favourite pink.

We called the painting 'The Deep End'. It held such significance to our client, her family history and her memories. This was important to honour.

In the last couple of weeks I have kept thinking back to beautiful memories and places on the farm. And then you suggested doing a location of significance to me. Oh the dots joined! So seeing your painting just now made me cry, in the most beautiful way, thank you! I can't stop looking at it, I love it so much.

Please reach out if you would like to know more about the process, or if you would enjoy having a custom painting made especially for you.

What is our place in this world? Over the last year, our lives became both bigger and smaller. In the context of a global pandemic, our domestic lives played out. We lived and loved. We existed in smaller spaces. While those around us died, others blossomed. An epic human drama continues to play out. Meanwhile, the land underneath us remains.

This Land That Holds Our Souls investigates our connectedness with one another, and with the land we live upon. It portrays an evolving ecosystem, all parts woven together in astonishingly intricate ways. Viewers may recognise the curve of the landscape around Daly's Reach, a section of the Brisbane River named after the artist's forebears.
