Creating Pointillist Clouds

Back in art school, I learned about Georges Seurat, a French Impressionist who had a different theory on painting: he discovered the ability of the eye and mind of the viewer to blend spots of colour into a fuller range of tones. Pointillism is a painting style made up of multitudes of small dots. It was coined in the 1880s and was one of the Impressionist movements that commenced the change towards modern art and abstraction. Pointillism is also used in Australian art, and many types of tribal art. It is essentially a different perspective on how we as viewers see fractured light. For example, when you put blue and yellow dots side by side, a viewer will make up the green tone in their mind. The result is that the mind is creating the colour, not only the painting. The effect is a beautiful shimmering surface of many different colours. Pointillist paintings are best viewed from a 4 - 5 metre distance, however up close, they are a mass of fascinating detail. For example, when you put blue and yellow dots side by side, a viewer will make up the green tone in their mind. Other Impressionist artists including Signac and Rysselberghe took on the style to beautiful effect in the late 1800s.

I've been experimenting with pointillism since I started painting, and it has evolved from the Impressionist style into my own. I created the first Pointillist Cloud painting about 5 years ago and have loved seeing them in client's homes. They bring such a sense of calm into a space. I recently received a message from a client in Wynnum who said: "It is like looking at the sky, where you can get lost, and see new things every time."

Each painting in the Pointillist Clouds series comprises over 10 layers of dots (or points) in different tones of paint. The dots are all intricately painted and the effect is developed from the first layers to the last. The warmth of sunrise pinks and peaches, misty greys, bold blues are delicately layered to create a beautiful composition. This style of painting is made up of layer upon layer of little dots. The colour scheme is in consultation with the client. Some versions have included more deep greys and sunset pinks. The painting above is 1.2 x 1.8 metres and would normally take around 3 weeks to complete.

The painting below was created for Rylo Co, a Brisbane based interior design company. Lauren Pearse, the founder and creative mind behind the team’s beautiful work, brought out the warm pink highlights in the painting with a gorgeous choice in cushions. The natural linen and timber ground the clouds in this pretty, calming space.
