Creating the ‘White Salt Nets’ for Wynnum

Our clients had just moved from Melbourne and wanted to commission a special piece for their beautiful new home in Wynnum. They had seen another recent piece and loved the style, but wanted the tones to be deeper, including ultramarine blues, pinks and a dash of lilac. I went over to their home to see the space it would be created for, and we decided on the right size for the wall and surrounds. Given they like to re-hang their collection from time to time, we also created it to be hung in landscape or portrait orientation.

The painting took around four weeks to make and included layers of oil pigments in a delicious wax medium. The colours and textures developed until the perfect balance in the base of the painting was achieved. Then, painting the detail of the netting started. This is the part that is almost like a meditation.

‘White Salt Nets’ for Wynnum, Oil and Wax Medium on Canvas, 180 x 120cm, 2021

Once complete, we framed the commission art in a Tasmanian oak float frame, which finished it perfectly. Filled with textural detail and layers of colour, this piece brings a contemporary contrast to the client’s lovely antique pieces. It is perfect for their seaside home.
