Thinking about art that tells your story?

Have you been thinking about adding some gorgeous artwork to your world, but not really sure how to go about it? Hear from Sarah Daly in her studio about what it’s like to commission personalised art that tells your story.

Here is a transcript of the video:

Have you been thinking about adding some gorgeous artwork to your world but not really sure how to go about it? This is a problem that I think lots of people have. Because the art world is sometimes a little bit separate and can be confusing. So I wanted to just open it up a little bit and show you more about how commissioning artwork works and how you might want to commission something for your home. So one of the ethics I went into painting with is that I wanted more people to feel like they could have beautiful, original artwork in their homes. And I think that's starting to happen more and more. And the whole point about what I do is to make that accessible for people. So you're designing and creating something with me that's actually that's perfect for your home. It's absolutely perfect. And it tells your story. So rather than going into galleries and feeling a bit confused, and quite frankly galleries can be a bit intimidating. I walk into them myself just going 'oh, gosh'. Some art galleries are wonderful, but I've had a lot of bad experiences with galleries unfortunately. You can buy from online marketplaces that's that's a really lovely place to go investigate. But it can be really hard to know what the quality of the artwork is. And when you get it, are you really going to love it? So I kind of flipped that on its head and I thought well, "Why not work with the real people in real homes in real spaces where my artwork is going to live? So then I could create something that's exactly what they needed and works exactly in the space. It talks to their personality."

This is an uber-personalized way to create art and not many artists will do this. It's something that I love, though. I love diving deeper into who you are, what your space is about what the intention of the space is. Investigating: "What's the feeling? Is it a space for your family? Is this something that you want to hand down to your kids? Is that a space that you just want to feel a bit Zen? Do you want to feel calm? Do you want to feel excited? Is this where people walk into your home for the first time and you want to make a great impression?"

All of these things they're great to find out about. And I find out, what's the story behind your life as well. A lot of the work I do is based on maps of where the people who I'm doing commission's for have lived. So the one behind me, for example, this is this is a commission for a gorgeous house that's actually just down the road from me, which is pretty fantastic. And that means I know the local area really well. We're near the Brisbane River. I walked into their home and I just got this sense of who they were, what they needed, what their home needed - pretty much straightaway and making this for them, knowing who these people are, what their home is about, how how they want it to look, and I found out what the fabrics were I found out about the carpet, all of that kind of thing. But the main thing was the feeling that they wanted to convey in that space. So I'm in the middle of making this now it's still not finished.

They contacted me. They sent an email and said, "Hey, I've got this new home that I'm building. I love going there. I love seeing the progress of their plans because I found out about their home maybe a year ago and they're finally gotten to the stage where they ready to think through the artwork. So I went down there, we had a conversation. And yeah, now I'm making this beautiful piece for them. But I don't actually have to go into your home. I don't have to see that space in person. Sometimes it's useful. Being just down the road that was really great for me. Great for them too. But I often work - actually the majority of the time - I work with photographs, I work with knowing your space, we'll have phone calls. We may have a zoom call. We kind of get to know the feeling of the space. And often people will say "Hey, Sarah, I've seen this piece that you've made before. I'd love something like that. I really love that feeling. But with my story and let's change things slightly - let's change the scale," that sort of thing. And I'll find out what's the size of your room, what kind of framing do you need, all of that kind of thing. So down to the detail. It all means that you get to have a piece of artwork in your world that you haven't just bought somewhere. It's not something that was made for some other purpose - for not for you. Instead, I want to make artwork that's absolutely right for you. So that's that's the purpose of my commission artwork: it means I can make exactly the right artwork for you. And that's the most rewarding thing for me.

I'm a commission artist and love doing this. And if you want to know more about it, please feel free to message me, email me. All of my details are available. So get in touch. I'm very happy to have a conversation with you about the perfect piece of artwork that tells your story.
